The 60-day notice if rent was raised by five percent plan in Collier County didn’t pass.

Joe Trachtenbert, the Chairman of Collier County’s Affordable Housing Advisory Committee says, “Having seen this defeated last week, I’m just going to wait and see. I hope it passes but I’m not sure it’ll absolutely will.”

The group went back to the drawing board Monday after Collier Commissioners rejected their request. Forcing landlords to give tenants a 60-day notice if they planned to increase rent by more than five percent.

Trachtenberg says renters need an opportunity to think about what’s next.

“You’re in trouble, you will likely have to find a new place to live, maybe find another job, put your kids in another school,” Trachtenberg says. “That’s the part I don’t understand why would anybody object to this? Why would anybody not support giving tenants the notice of an event of their life that is going to be overwhelming?”

Now, they hope commissioners will okay a plan making landlords share information about housing programs the county has available.

Johnmichael Fernandez, a member of the Southwest Florida Apartment Association says the group is against the ordinance. Fernandez says local policies can cause confusion for housing providers and renters. This conversation is focused on collier county.

WINK News learned the city of Naples will have a similar conversation on Wednesday.
