(CBS News) Florida is launching a new toll discount program for people who use SunPass at state DOT tolls. The program called SunPass Savings is for people who use Florida’s Turnpike System and toll facilities owned by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). In Southwest Florida, only Alligator Alley is included in the program. “These are our people, and we would like to provide some relief,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. This program will begin September 1, 2022, and will run for six months, and is estimated to provide $38 million in relief to SunPass commuters. “This will end up returning nearly $40 million to SunPass customers over this six-month period,” said DeSantis. The toll relief program will give customers with at least 40 paid transactions a month a 20% credit to their SunPass account. Customers with 80 or more paid transactions will receive a 25% credit each month. On average, customers using FDOT Turnpike facilities for their daily commute spend $50 per month on tolls. This program could save the average commuter $60 over the next six months, and commuters with more transactions will increase their savings. A map of included toll facilities and more information on the program can be found here. The program applies to two-axle vehicles and is available to customers who use SunPass or other Florida transponders with accounts in good standing. Jose Luis Perez said he drives the alley all the time. In a car, he said the trip to and from Miami costs $6. In a truck, it can run anywhere from $12-$40. Perez said he could use the discount. “Anything is helpful right now. Anything is helpful because, like I said, bills come the day after tomorrow they are here, plus you have to go to Miami, get some more work. It’s just more money spent on a daily basis,” said Perez. SunPass is the prepaid electronic toll collection program operated by Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, the toll agency for the state.
