A Waste Pro driver showed heroic bravery following a fiery rollover crash involving an oil tanker on Interstate 595 in Davie.

According to a press release, Waste Pro driver Dwight Howard noticed fire and smoke while on his usual daily route on I-595, in late October.

Howard notified dispatch before racing over to help however possible. Howard took the fire extinguisher from his truck and ran toward the dangerous smokey scene.

A fire had overwhelmed the tanker truck’s cab. At the same time, Howard and others did everything they could to free the driver.

Noticing the driver was on fire after he was freed, Howard used his uniform to extinguish the flames.

First responders transported the driver to a local hospital. The driver had burns covering 100% of his body but eventually lost his life.

An earlier version of this story had said the victim was still recovering.
