Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis held a press conference regarding education and parental rights.

Joining DeSantis during the press conference, on Thursday, was Florida Department of Education Commissioner Manny Diaz Jr.

The press conference was held at 10 a.m. at the University of Central Florida Cancer Center located at 6400 Sanger Road.

DeSantis began the conference by targeting the notion that Florida bans books.

The governor clarified the statement that the state has given the tools to parents for them to make an informed decision as to what books their children should read.

“Over the past year, parents have used their rights to object to pornographic and sexually explicit material they found in school libraries,” said DeSantis.

When concluding his statement, DeSantis called on the state legislature to iron out the finer details regarding what books should be incorporated into the Florida school curriculum.

Diaz Jr. followed DeSantis to speak on debunking the narrative that Florida is seeking to ban books outright.

Diaz Jr. continued to mention that the current administration has reviewed books and prohibited books from public schools that contained inappropriate content.

After the 2023 legislative session, House Bill 1069 was signed, which restricted public school instruction on human sexuality, sexually transmitted diseases and related topics to grades 6 through 12.
