Lessons Learned: Day 1 of Caloosahatchee Bridge closures

Published: Updated:

A domino effect of traffic delays, the Caloosahatchee Bridge closure had hundreds of drivers searching for a new route on Monday.

Now that we’re down a bridge, being behind the wheel in Fort Myers is not for the faint of heart.

From downtown, over to Colonial Boulevard, and across the Midpoint bridge, backups made some drivers get creative with routes to try and avoid it all.

Off U.S. 41 and Pondella Road, the Lee County Sheriff’s office handed out a few tickets for people who cut through a Big Lots parking lot to avoid the traffic.

When quitting time came around, rush hour downtown had drivers inching toward home.

For ten weeks, the Caloosahatchee bridge will continue to be closed as construction workers add a walkway to the bridge.

It’s a new normal that’s reminding us all what it means to be patient with the pedal.
