Now that hurricane season is in full swing, Southwest Floridians are urged to protect their homes through any means necessary.

Sandbags provide additional support to homes to help reduce property flooding from heavy rain caused by storms.

The Matlacha/ Pine Island Fire Control District offers free sand for residents to collect for storm use.

Participants may utilize empty bags and shovels provided on-site by the fire control district.

If you need a sandbag from your home, drive to the Matlacha/Pine Island Fire Control District Station 1, located at 5700 Pine Island Road in Bokeelia.

The South Trail Fire & Rescue Station 63 will also provide sandbags for residents at the fire station location at 5531 Halifax Ave in Fort Myers.

The fire district urges that your vehicle must be able to handle the weight of the sandbags that you’re taking.
