The City of Sanibel has announced a mandatory evacuation and curfew.

The city has announced a 24-hour curfew beginning Tuesday at 10 p.m. This curfew is in place to protect the island’s residents, their homes and businesses. It will continue until further notice.

The curfew prohibits any pedestrian or vehicular movement within the city of Sanibel limits except for on-duty police officers, firefighters, city employees and other emergency services and utility personnel explicitly authorized by the city.

According to the National Hurricane Center’s 5 p.m. update, the storm has shifted slightly south, and Sanibel is now expected to potentially see a storm surge of up to 12 feet.

At this point, the city has completed its preparations for the storm, with minor things to finalize.

The city urges residents to evacuate as soon as possible.

The city will also stop all emergency services at 45 mph sustained winds.
