Southwest Floridians were asked to come out and support the family of fallen Charlotte County Deputy Sgt. Elio Diaz, and you showed up.

The Port Charlotte IHop Manager, Bobbi Snyder, told WINK News that customers helped raise $1600 for Diaz’s family on Wednesday, by dining there from breakfast to closing time.

Diaz was shot and killed last month while conducting a traffic stop.

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office said Diaz spent an hour working to help a homeless man before that man turned on him and shot him.

A portion of Wednesday’s sales were donated to help cover funeral costs and related expenses.

Diaz is survived by his wife and four children.
