GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) – Santa Fe College has won the 2015 Aspen Prize as the top performing community college in the U.S.

The Aspen Institute announced the winners Wednesday, selecting the Gainesville-based college as tops in student learning, degree completion, graduate employment, earnings and success for minority and low-income students.

Santa Fe was selected from 1,123 other public community colleges and will receive $800,000 in prize funds.

Dr. Jill Biden – Vice President Joe Biden’s wife – attended the announcement at the National Press Club in Washington. She said many people rely on community colleges as a stepping stone to a college degree and that schools like Santa Fe are leading by example.

The institute cited Santa Fe’s 62-percent graduation rate and its 70-percent acceptance rate for transfer students at nearby University of Florida.
