NAPLES, Fla.- The Humane Society of Naples is getting creative in its push to get more dogs adopted.

The new “pay what they weigh” offer is only for Chihuahuas. The shelter says currently one third of all of its animals are Chihuahuas.

The humane society says they have an influx of the dogs because too many people are breeding them and when they aren’t sold, they end up at the shelter.

“It helps us interact with potential adopters. The whole point of this is weighing them in front of the doctor,” said Rachel Johnston. “Oh wow my dog is 8.23 pounds! So they pay $8.23.”

This is the second year the humane society has offered the deal. Last year they adopted out nearly 50 Chihuahuas. So far this month, 25 have found their new forever home.
