FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) – A sewer line has ruptured in Fort Lauderdale, prompting flooding and foul odors in a neighborhood.

Fort Lauderdale spokesman Matt Little tells local news outlets city crews began work Tuesday afternoon to fix the 20-inch sewer main break near the city’s Regal Trace Apartments. The water reached up to a foot and covered five square blocks. He says the problem was exacerbated by heavy rains.

David Littlefield who lives in the area said the neighborhood “smelled like vomit.”

City officials advised motorists to find alternate routes around the area and asked pedestrians to avoid standing water near site. The city also issued a precautionary advisory to avoid water-related recreational activities along the New River.

Little says city employees were working on draining the sewage.
