Publix brand ice cream recalled over cookie dough, Listeria concerns

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Publix has issued a voluntary recall of its Premium Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream over concerns that the cookie dough could be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The ice cream was sold in 1,127 stores throughout Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee and North Carolina, according to the United States Food and Drug Administration. The specific products at risk have product code 000-41415-03843 with a sale date of May 27, 2017, according to the FDA. Consumers can find this information at the bottom of their ice cream cartons.

There have been no reported cases of illness due to the ice cream, according to Publix spokesperson Maria Brous. But Listeria monocytogenes can cause deadly infecions in children, elderly adults and people with weak immune systems. The bacteria can also cause major issues for pregnant women and the following symptoms in healthy people:

  • high fever
  • severe headache
  • stiffness
  • nausea
  • abdominal pain
  • diarrhea

Blue Bell Ice Cream has also recalled its cookie dough products.
