EAST NAPLES, Fla. — A good Samaritan helped Collier County Sheriff’s Office deputies catch a man who drove off after hitting a dog on Bayshore Drive Thursday. The dog was playing alongside another dog without a leash when the man hit it with his truck’s back trailer after attempting to swerve out of the way, a witness said. Kenny McKinnon then jumped into the back of a man’s boat after the driver refused to stop. “He drove away so I was kind of annoyed,” McKinnon said. “Someone has to speak for the dog.” Deputies eventually caught the man in a parking lot near Bayshore Road and U.S. 41. The man who hit the dog was not arrested. The condition of the dog remains unclear. Florida law states a dog or animal is personal property and drivers can be held accountable. However, if the animal is off the leash, the law protects the motorist.
