An investigation into a couple found dead in their Naples home Sept. 4 has been ruled a homicide-suicide, according to Naples Police.

Two people were mysteriously found dead inside their upscale home in the 800 block of 7th Street South near Cambier Park in downtown Naples around 9 a.m. that day.

NPD received the call as a possible medical emergency after a key holder arrived at the location to take one of the deceased to an appointment. There was no answer at the door, so they went into the residence and found the two, then called police.

Naples Police detectives began their investigation alongside the Collier County Medical Examiner which concluded the incident as a homicide-suicide.

The suspect was identified as Robert Barnes, who lived in the home. The police department is unable to release information identifying the victim under the Marsy’s Law exemption.

While not all of the details of the investigation have been completed, information was discovered on an electronic device owned by Barnes which detailed his role in the incident.

The victim’s death was due to a fatal knife wound, which was ruled a homicide, and Barnes committed suicide in a similar fashion.

Police say they believe the homicide occurred during the late-night hours of Sept. 1 and early morning hours of Sept. 2.

It is also believed that Barnes took his own life within hours after the homicide.
