Driver killed, 2 others seriously injured in crash near Port Charlotte

One person was killed and two others were seriously injured after a crash near Port Charlotte and North Port early Friday morning.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, A 31-year-old man driving an SUV was killed in at the intersection with Veterans Boulevard and Atwater Street.

A car driven by a 23-year-old man from North Port was traveling east at a high speed on Veterans Boulevard, approaching Atwater Street around 3:49 a.m.

At the same time, the 31-year-old was driving the SUV with a 29-year-old woman in the passenger’s seat while traveling north on Atwater Street, approaching Veterans Boulevard.

The car proceeded through a steady red traffic signal as the SUV entered the intersection of Veterans Boulevard from Atwater Street, and the car T-boned the left side of the SUV and came to rest in the grassy median of Veterans Boulevard.

The SUV continued north after being hit, going across the westbound lanes of Veterans Boulevard and hit a tree on the north shoulder of Veterans Boulevard.

The 31-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car and the passenger of the SUV were transported to Lee Memorial Hospital to treat serious injuries.

The crash remains under investigation, and charges are pending.
