Port Charlotte motorcyclist killed in North Port crash

A Port Charlotte man was killed in a crash with a box truck in North Port Tuesday morning.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the 24-year-old motorcyclist was traveling northbound on US-41 around 5:30 a.m., occupying the outside travel lane as he approached a steady red traffic signal at the River Road intersection. A box truck, driven by a 26-year-old North Port man, was traveling westbound on River Road occupying the left-turn-only lane, approaching the steady green traffic signal located at US-41.

The motorcyclist ran the steady red light and collided with the left side of the truck, being thrown from the motorcycle and landing in the paved intersection. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash is still under investigation.
