One driver was seriously injured in a crash involving seven vehicles and 16 different people on Alligator Alley in Collier County Tuesday afternoon.

A tractor-trailer driven by a 33-year-old man from Riverview was traveling west in the right lane of I-75, approaching mile marker 88, around 5 p.m. Due to an unrelated traffic crash at mile marker 89, westbound traffic ahead was already congested. Six other vehicles were ahead of the tractor-trailer, stopped in the traffic congestion.

The driver of the tractor-trailer failed to slow down and rear-ended a pickup truck with one passenger. The tractor-trailer proceeded down the right shoulder, sideswiping another pickup truck and a sedan with two passengers. The tractor-trailer collided with the guardrail, reentered the westbound travel lanes and rear-ended an SUV with six passengers. The SUV was dragged west, and the left front of it collided with the right front of another SUV.

The tractor-trailer continued to travel west and rear-ended another tractor-trailer. The Riverview man was left in serious condition. The crash remains under investigation.
