FGCU police wrangle 6-foot gator on busy campus boardwalk
A 6-foot alligator made an unexpected appearance at Florida Gulf Coast University, causing a commotion on a busy boardwalk.
More police will be seen on the campus of Ida Baker High School in Cape Coral on Monday morning as a precaution after a threat, deemed non-credible, was reported against the school Sunday.
On Sunday, parents of students at Ida Baker High received an automated call about a threat. Neighbors called WINK News to report hearing that an 18-year-old senior was threatening to shoot up the school. The extra law enforcement is a security measure intended to ease concerns from parents, students and school staff about this threat.
The School District of Lee County provided the following statement to WINK: “There was a reported threat against the school circulating on social media. Cape Coral police investigated and determined it was not credible. Extra officers are at the school this morning as a precaution.”
The safety and security of students seem to be top of mind for many people in Southwest Florida this year. WINK is currently conducting a back-to-school survey for parents, students and teachers in the area. Based on responses to one of the questions we posed, asking the community to rank its concerns ahead of this school year, safety and security rank at the top. COVID-19 was ranked as the last concern.
You still have time to complete that survey. WINK is taking your comments and concerns, such as those concerning school threats, directly to Southwest Florida school district officials.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
