The Collier County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man they say left the scene after crashing into a car with kids inside Friday night.

Deputies say they responded to a crash on Roberts Ave. in Immokalee around 10 p.m. Friday. At the crash scene, deputies found an SUV with front-end damage but no one inside and another SUV with damage to the front driver’s side.

According to the sheriff’s office, the SUV that appeared to have been hit in the front driver’s side had children inside, but say they were not hurt.

The person who called deputies said they saw two people get out of the other SUV involved and said the driver was wearing a yellow shirt and blue jeans.

Nearby, deputies looking for the driver found a man matching the description provided by the other driver walking with a limp along N. 3rd Street. That man was later identified as 27-year-old Sergio Hernandez.

Deputies say they attempted to speak with Hernandez but say he ran when they addressed him. Deputies were able to catch up with Hernandez and take him into custody.

When searching Hernandez, deputies found keys that matched the SUV involved in the crash. They say he also had a cut on his nose and a seatbelt mark on his shoulder and collarbone, which was consistent with him being the driver.

Hernandez was arrested and is facing charges of hit-and-run, resisting arrest, and driving without a license. He is being held on an out-of-county warrant for possession of palmetto berries.
