A firefighter breaks a car window and pulls a driver out of a car after crashing into a canal in Cape Coral Saturday morning.

According to the Cape Coral Fire Department, Battalion 3, Engine 5, Rescue 5, and Engine 4 all went to NE 9th Avenue and NE 12 Street in response to a car in a canal just before 5:30 a.m.

At the scene, firefighter Kyle Mann swam to the submerged car. Using a life hammer, Mann then broke the car window.

At this point, the driver had been trapped in his car and underwater. With some great teamwork, officers with the Cape Coral Police Department pulled the driver out of the car and back to shore.

Quickly the victim was brought to a Lee County Public Safety ambulance that was at the scene.

The driver did regain consciousness and was breathing. Although, it’s unclear how long the driver was unconscious and not breathing.

Later, the Cape Coral Fire Department divers cleared the car and the canal of other possible occupants.

All Cape Coral firefighters are trained to be rescue swimmers for circumstances like these.
