The excessive heat warning affecting parts of Southwest Florida has been extended north, affecting DeSoto, Highlands and Sarasota counties for the very first time.

An excessive heat warning goes into effect when an area reaches and maintains a heat index of 115 degrees for two hours.

The heat advisory affecting Lee and Charlotte counties, by contrast, requires a heat index of 108 degrees for two hours.
