Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis spoke on nursing education during a news conference held in Daytona Beach.

During the conference held on Tuesday at the L. Gale Lemerand Student Center at Daytona State College, DeSantis spoke on Florida’s public universities rising through the national rankings.

While speaking on education, the governor spoke on the importance of workforce education, highlighting the necessity of filling medical jobs, primarily nursing positions.

DeSantis then announced an increase to the Florida Nursing Initiative that funded education and awarded public universities funding for its nursing programs.

He mentioned allocating an additional $5 million to the $125 million for the Linking Industry of Nursing Education (LINE) program

The program was renewed in 2023; however, the governor announced the additional funding on Tuesday.

The governor then stated that the program’s success has increased the graduation and application rate for nursing programs across the state, justifying additional funding for the upcoming state budget.

“This is an important profession, which needs quality people enrolling,” said DeSantis. “With the fast growth of the state, we’d fall severely behind had we not been proactive about our nursing programs here.”
