Twenty-three years have passed since the 9/11 terrorist attacks that killed almost 3,000 people, and people across the country continue to remember that fated day that has been etched into American history.

Southwest Florida will forever be tied to the event as President George W. Bush was reading to a classroom at Emma E. Booker Elementary School, which is located in Sarasota County, when the news was broken.

Several events were held on Wednesday to remember each life lost on Sept. 11, 2001.

In Cape Coral, nearly 3,000 flags were placed at the Cape Coral City Hall to honor those who died in the terrorist attacks.

The City of Cape Coral held a ceremony at city hall at 8:30 a.m., along with a presentation of colors by the Cape Coral Fire and Police Honor Guards.

A moment of silence and other ceremonies were held during the presentation.

The flags, each with the name of a victim, will be in place throughout Wednesday before being removed.
