Hendry County spraying after Mosquito-borne illness advisory issued in Sarasota

Florida’s recent rainy climate has created a breeding ground for mosquitoes, raising concerns over the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses.

The Sarasota County Health Department said three sentinel chickens have tested positive for the West Nile virus infection.

The Florida Department of Health issued a mosquito-borne illness advisory in Sarasota.

To get ahead of the spread, Hendry County has begun spraying insecticide to stop the mosquito population from increasing.

Symptoms of West Nile virus include:

  • Headaches
  • Fever
  • Body aches
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

According to the Florida Department of Health, immunocompromised individuals and those over the age of 60 are at an increased risk of developing a more severe infection.
