The Pine Island Causeway is getting major improvements. Crews are working to make the roads safer and smoother.

The Florida Department of Transportation is paving the road and making progress.

Residents said that traffic is not bad during the off-season. Many residents drive through the Pine Island Causeway to shop at The Matlacha Shirt Company and The Perfect Cup.

The owner of the Matlacha Shirt Company manages the location by himself during the off-season. He said the biggest problem he sees on the bridge is the rush people get in after a few minutes of delay during construction.

Residents said that a little bit of traffic and stop-and-go driving is worth the end result along the Pine Island Causeway.

WINK News Reporter Jolena Esperto reached out to FDOT to ask if they have any plans in place for when tourism picks up. They have not responded as of Friday.
