Sanibel is in a state of emergency, effective immediately.

Sanibel’s mayor, Richard Johnson, and the city manager, Dana Souza, provided a live update on storm preparations.

Tropical Storm Milton is expected to strengthen into a hurricane in less than 24 hours.

Sanibel is likely to see tropical force winds impact the area beginning on Tuesday by 8 p.m.

Souza expects Sanibel to be affected by storm surge. The severity of the storm surge will be dependent on the tide levels at the time the storm makes landfall and the wind-driven waves.

The mayor directed that residents not put any more debris from Hurricane Helene within the right of way. On Monday, Waste Management crews will be out to pick up as much of the hurricane debris as possible.

Landfills will be closed on Tuesday and there will be no collection then.

City offices will be open on Monday but will be closed on Tuesday through Thursday.

Those needing hurricane re-entry passes can get them at the recreation center on Monday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. or at the police department from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On Tuesday, the police department will issue hurricane re-entry passes from 8 a.m. to noon.

Plan to evacuate if you’re in a low-lying section of the island.
