The Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a scene located on Pine Island Road in North Fort Myers after shots were fired during a failed carjacking and a suspect turned up dead.

Deputies arrived on the scene at around 5 a.m. on Monday in front of a shopping center laundromat on Pine Island Road.

Two occupied parking spaces in front of the laundromat were seen wrapped with police tape while deputies worked the scene.

The two vehicles taped off appeared not to have any visible damage.

According to deputies, a man pulled up in a red Jeep Compass and threatened a woman inside a faded blue Toyota Camry with a gun to hand over her car keys.

The victim refused and the male suspect said, “I will shoot you if you don’t give me the keys.”

She continued to refuse even after the suspect fired the gun into the ground.

He then walked away but not before telling her to call deputies to get the car he pulled up in.

After deputies arrived, they confirmed that the Jeep was taken from a residential burglary that occurred shortly before the confrontation.

A K-9 was used to track down the suspect who was found deceased.
