Southwest Florida law enforcement will hold a fundraiser for Charlotte County Sgt. Elio Diaz, who was killed in the line of duty.

On Saturday, 40 off-duty officers will gather at several Publix and Walmart locations from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to accept donations for the family of Diaz.

Diaz was killed Dec. 15 following a traffic stop at a gas station in Charlotte Harbor, where he discovered that the shooter, Andrew Mostyn, was driving without insurance and a suspended license.

Diaz attempted to assist Mostyn, who had turned out to be living out of his car.

After an hour trying to work with Mostyn’s insurance, the suspect approached Diaz and fatally shot him with a rifle.

Provided below are the five locations where the volunteers will accept donations:

  • Publix at the Shoppes at North Cape, 2481 Del Prado Blvd. N. in Cape Coral.
  • Walmart Supercenter, 5001 Taylor Road in Punta Gorda.
  • Walmart Supercenter, 375 Kings Highway in Port Charlotte.
  • Publix in the Crescent B Commons, 42051 Cypress Parkway in Babcock Ranch.
  • Publix at the Punta Gorda Crossing, 2310 Tamiami Trl Unit 1129 in Punta Gorda.

A GoFundMe page has been made for Sgt. Diaz’s family.
