The Florida Department of Transportation held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the Caloosahatchee River Bridge and the New Sidewalk Project.

According to FDOT, the new sidewalk ensures safer crossings between North Fort Myers and downtown Fort Myers.

Two pedestrian fatalities in 2023 underscored the need for these enhancements, sparking community advocacy, which FDOT responded to.

The project, which spans U.S. 41 from First Street to North Key Drive, prioritizes pedestrian and bicyclist safety while fostering economic development and modernizing vital infrastructure.

This project was expedited through a strategic decision to close the bridge for 10 weeks, reducing the timeline by one year and three months.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at 11 a.m. Friday at the Centennial Park Pavilion at 2000 West First Street in Fort Myers.
