Egg prices continue to soar, causing many Southwest Florida residents to rethink their breakfast choices.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the rise in cost stems from the lingering effects of the 2022 bird flu outbreak.
WINK News reporter Camila Periera explored local stores to see if any deals could be found.
Periera found various prices, with Publix having some of the highest. A dozen extra large eggs can cost you $5.60.
Publix offered organic, free-range, cage-free or pasture-raised eggs at prices ranging from $6 to $11 per dozen.
At Aldi, a dozen large eggs cost $4.67, about a dollar less than Publix. However, there is a two-dozen-per-person limit, and a sign states, “Due to recent market conditions, egg prices have increased. We apologize for any inconvenience.”
Periera found the cheapest eggs at Walmart, with a dozen large eggs priced at $4.17.

People recognized the slightly reduced egg prices and capitalized on the opportunity. However, this made eggs harder to find, especially at affordable prices.
The USDA expects egg prices to increase another 20% by the end of the year due to ongoing market data and the bird flu outbreak.
