Lee County commissioners have approved a new contract to ease traffic between Fort Myers and Cape Coral.

The $1.3 million contract will add a third left turn lane on northbound Summerlin Road to access the Midpoint Bridge.

Residents are hopeful that this change will reduce traffic congestion, particularly during rush hour when backups are common on Summerlin Road.

The contract also includes signal modifications and ADA upgrades.

“It has caused accidents over the years. I’ve seen it. It would help that a lot,” said Shawn, a local pedestrian.

“After school, it gets pretty bad over here, just because a lot of kids coming out in between usually like 3 to 6 o’clock. It’s pretty hard to get through this area, so you gotta take other roads and back roads,” said Brad King, a resident.

Construction is set to begin in April and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
