For the second time in two years, students in Sanibel and Fort Myers Beach headed to a different school Wednesday morning because of the damage left by a hurricane.

After a week-long break due to the impacts of Hurricane Milton, most children in Southwest Florida are heading back to school.

The City of Sanibel is set to hold a news conference to provide an update on Hurricane Milton.

The Sanibel Recreation Center will be open as a comfort station on Sunday, Oct. 13, from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., providing relief and essential services for local residents.

Crews have opened the Sanibel causeway to everyone, even those without a hurricane re-entry pass, but the city asks that people avoid the island unless they live there or need to travel there for business. 

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday morning the Blind Pass Bridge is now open but must be crossed using caution due to clean-up crews. The City of Sanibel has announced a mandatory evacuation and curfew starting at 10 p.m. Tuesday ahead of Milton.

Sanibel is already dealing with flooding from the heavy rain we’ve seen over the past few days, and Milton is expected to bring 10 feet of storm surge to the island.
