Hearts & Homes Inc. finds homes for homeless veterans

LEE COUNTY, Fla.- One Lee County organization has made it their mission to take homeless veterans off the streets and into a safe place.

A Merry Christmas for Brandon Prosper, only 7 1/2 years old, almost didn’t happen. Brandon’s father Edward Prosper is a Navy veteran.

Ed left the service in 2008. Since then, he has had a tough time finding a job.

“A lot of it was adjusting. I got used to the structure the military had,” said Ed Prosper. “Some jobs, when I would find them, would end up down sizing soon afterward.”

Just 4 months ago, the Prosper family was homeless, until Hearts and Homes for Veterans Incorporated got involved. The organization promotes “Veterans helping Veterans” in Lee County.

“Too many of our veterans get left behind,” said Don Payton, President of Hearts and Homes. “There’s no veteran that should ever be homeless.”

Members go out on the streets themselves to find veterans. They then work with the VA, to put vets into section 8 housing. Since 2013, they have helped put 150 veterans into homes.

“Our goal is to lift them out of poverty,” said Payton.

Hearts and Homes goes one step further, donating everything they can think of, from household goods, rent, even utilities.

“We would take food, packs, sleeping bags. Make an empty house a home. Everything stays here, goes to the veterans we help,” said Payton.

The organization even threw a Christmas party this year, where they handed out gifts to dozens of veterans and their families.

But they have a Christmas wish themselves. Right now they work out of a van, but are hoping to one day find a warehouse.

“We want to get a distribution and service center. We started this so we could be effective and efficient, if we had the warehouse, we could do so much,” said Payton, with tears in his eyes.

It’s all to continue their mission, of giving homes to veterans.

Ed showed us his home, saying “everything we have, most of the toys were donated, almost every bit of furniture.” He added, “it feels pretty amazing. Haven’t felt this comfortable in years.”
