LEE COUNTY, Fla.- Lee County commissioners approved a seven year contract with a company that supplies large garbage cans to thousands of local homes.

Commissioners unanimously approved a new contract with Progressive Waste Solutions to move Lehigh Acres and Alva to automated trash collection with large trash bins.

The company says they will offer three different sized garbage cans for people who don’t want to use those 95 gallon ones.

Dozens of Progressive employees attended Tuesday’s meeting wearing bright yellow vests.

Commissioners say the company’s bid for automated recycling and garbage collection is a higher level of service and the way of the future. It also came in at the lowest cost increase to homeowners.

Company leaders say it’s a safer way to pick up trash.

“We’re gonna clean up Leigh, it’s gonna be supplying free carts to residents,” said Jim Wheatley with the Progressive company.

Advanced Disposal was also bidding for the contract, but ultimately commissioners decided to stay with Progressive.

The new deal begins October 1 and will impact about 47,000 residents.
