FORT MYERS BEACH Fla. — FGCU partnered with Matanzas on the Bay to host the 2nd annual Lionfish Spearfishing Tournament. Four teams of divers competed. They spent Saturday diving for Lionfish with the intent of winning the Lionfish tournament. The competition is designed to try to slow the spread of the invasive species. An FWC biologist told WINK News that the fish were probably brought here through the aquarium trade and then either intentionally or accidentally set free in SWFL’s waters where they have no natural predators.
Four chefs prepared the Lionfish for diners to sample. Matanzas on the Bay General Manager Glen Petrarca told WINK News that his restaurant plans to begin offering the fish on their menu as soon as they can find a supplier.
