Detectives: Baby Chance’s mother led them to body; charged with murder

SARASOTA, Fla.- Kristen Bury, the mother of Chance Walsh, faced a Sarasota County judge Saturday morning and is now charged with first degree murder in the death of her infant son.

Detectives with the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office say Bury led them to Chance’s body.

A probable cause affidavit for Bury’s arrest reveals Bury and Walsh told detectives Chance died in the morning hours of September 16 at their home on Orduna Drive.

The affidavit goes on to say the two told detectives they left to Florida to “start a new life somewhere else.”

On Thursday, October 15, Bury told detectives they would find Chance’s body, at a gravesite located near Elliot Court in North Port. The area off Wylam Drive and English Circle is heavily wooded and abandoned approximately 13 miles from Chance’s home.

At Elliot Court, detectives found a fragment of a blue surgical type glove, as well as the body of an infant covered only with a diaper.

Chance’s mother arrived at the Sarasota County Jail late Friday night. She is being held with no bond currently at the Sarasota County Jail.

U.S. Marshals picked Bury up on from the Jasper County Jail in South Carolina. Chance’s father, Joseph Walsh, remains in the Jasper County Jail, charged with child neglect.

According to the affidavit, the sheriff’s office plans to charge with first degree murder as well, once he is extradited.

A Charlotte County dive team also searched the water off the El Jobean Fishing Pier Friday afternoon in connection with the baby’s disappearance.

Chance was last seen at his home on Sept. 9. Authorities say the couple told family members inconsistent stories about where the baby was.

Sarasota County Sheriff Tom Knight said Bury and Walsh are the only two suspects in Chance’s death at this time.

A vigil will be held tonight at 7:30 at the Peace Christian Fellowship at 3010 S Sumter Blvd. in North Port.
