FORT MYERS, Fla.- The Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) is partnering with the social networking site Nextdoor to launch a new crime prevention tool aimed at building better communication between residents and authorities.

LCSO says it’s the first Southwest Florida law enforcement agency to use the program, calling it “neighborhood watch on steroids.”

“With the use of Nextdoor, I believe we are taking Crime Prevention and Community Policing to another level, allowing us to reach residents quickly with valuable, sometimes urgent information,” said Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott.

There is no charge to be a part of Nextdoor and the partnership comes at no cost to the county, the sheriff’s office said.

Residents can join an already existing private neighborhood website available in their location, or create a new one if one doesn’t already exist.

The sheriff’s office will use Nextdoor to send residents safety and security tips, community events and workshops, crime bulletins specific to their area, alerts and emergency notifications.

Residents can also send members of the sheriff’s office a private message about an issue, but authorities stress the app does not replace 911 in the case of an emergency.

There are already 15,000 Lee County residents using the app.
