FORT MYERS, Fla. – Police are investigating a drive-by shooting that injured one man at Jeffcot Street and Henderson Avenue Sunday, witnesses say.

One of the witnesses was the alleged victim’s mother who said her son was shot in the hip. Almeda Jones was outside her duplex preparing to go wash her clothes when her 23-year-old son, Desmond Jones, was hit, she said Sunday.

“He was putting clothes in the trunk of my car for me to get them washed and we were right beside each other,” Jones said. “A driver just came by and started shooting. I mean like five feet from us — he just started shooting. And then he drove on.”

She said the vehicle was a dark color but she mostly remembers the gun pointed at her.

“All I could see was a dark gun. It was all I could see out of the windows, out the back seat of a car,” Jones said. “I passed out, of course. And I didn’t realize he had gotten shot until after I came to check.”

Jones said she hopes the person who shot her son is held accountable and is thankful that she is okay.

“I just hope that whoever this individual is, he just realize he can’t just go up shooting people, and take innocent people’s lives. You know, I could have been not here today talking to you, I’m thankful and grateful to God that I am,” she said.
