In an effort to help students make better choices, a school district plans to host a series of seminars to deter drug usage by youths.

It is not just alcohol or cigarettes parents of teenagers need to worry about. Marijuana is also a major concern.

The 2018 Florida Youth survey named marijuana the third most commonly used substance among Florida students. One out of 10 students in middle school or high school reported they have used marijuana in the last 30 days.

“One drop of hash oil is enough to make that a felony,” said Kathy Wynne, Lee County School District prevention specialist.

To educate students about the consequences of the illegal substance, the School District of Lee County is turning to parents with a series of seminars breaking down the myths and facts of teen marijuana use.

The next seminar will be at Cape Coral High School next Tuesday.

“They’ll learn what to look for,” Wynee said. “What could be an indicator that their child could be using marijuana.”
