A 19-year-old woman was shot and killed in Golden Gate on Wednesday night.

According to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, the woman was taken to North Collier Hospital with a gunshot wound to her stomach. She was later flown to a hospital in Lee County where she died.

Deputies said the investigation led them to a scene on Santa Barbara Boulevard where they determined the shooting was an isolated incident.

According to the sheriff’s office, the victim was a recent arrival from Cuba.

The investigation into the death continues.

The sheriff’s office is not saying much but Sheriff Kevin Rambosk is urging gun owners to lock their guns.

“I have said this many times before and I’m saying it again, if you’re a gun owner and I am one, lock up firearms when they are not in use,” Rambosk said. “If you reduce the chances of guns ending up in the wrong hands you also reduce the chances of a major tragedy.”

Mark Baker, manager at the training bureau of the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, said keep  your firearms store.

“Be a responsible gun owner,” Baker said. “It’s not a toy, it’s a tool. It’s piece of equipment that law enforcement officers carry every day, it’s very dangerous and be responsible about it. If you have small children or somebody else that can access that weapon, please by all means, keep it secured and locked up out of the reach of others.”

No other details were released.
