Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis spoke about squatter’s rights and House Bill 621 during a press conference in Orlando.

Before the conference, he posted on X about putting an end to the “squatter scams” in Florida.

The press conference was held on Wednesday afternoon at the Orange County State Attorney’s Office, and the governor began by stating that he would sign House Bill 621, which would allow a homeowner to remove a squatter from their property.

He then stated that a homeowner would now be able to fill out a form to submit to the local county sheriff’s office, which would allow the removal of the squatter from the residence.

DeSantis mentioned that this law will help property owners streamline the squatter eviction process, removing the time and cost associated with squatter legal battles.

“The fact that you have these remedies, the fact that you can have deputies come in and liberate your residence for you very quickly, people will not try it in Florida,” said DeSantis.

He then signed the House Bill into law after panelists State Attorney Ninth Judicial Circuit Andrew Bain and Orange County Sheriff John Mina spoke.

Though Attorney General Ashley Moody was slated to attend, she did not make an appearance.

This press conference was originally intended to happen on Tuesday but was postponed due to the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore on Tuesday.
