Sanibel and Captiva picking back up after Helene

Published: Updated:

It’s a race against the clock for all of Southwest Florida as communities pick up from Hurricane Helene. Rain is in the forecast again.

So many people’s homes and businesses are damaged.

On Captiva, excavators and volunteers with shovels scooped up all the sand that washed ashore. Residents hope the incoming rain won’t cause any setbacks.

We drove around Sanibel and Captiva to see how the recovery has been going since Helene hit.

There is still much cleanup.

We spoke to the city of Sanibel about what they plan to do over the next few days, and they told us they are making sure the storm drainage system is ready.

We spoke with PIO Eric Jackson.

“Crews are out to prepare for that, to prepare for an indentation of water weirs have been opened up to allow for extra capacity for any rain that we may get and we are prepared for any flooding that may occur,” Jackson said.

With this upcoming rainfall over the next week, the city said if anyone has questions or concerns to reach out to them.
