What’s open and closed for Hurricane Milton

As Hurricane Milton begins to impact the west coast of Florida, services and businesses in Southwest Florida have adjusted their hours or have closed temporarily.

Grocery stores, essential services and schools have announced closures due to impacts from Milton.

Government services have also nnounced closures of certain offices, roads, parking garages and utility or trash collection services.

Read below for a detailed list of how major retailers, services and local governments are adjusting their schedules before, during and after Milton.

Schools

Shelters in Southwest Florida

  • Shelters have begun to open. WINKNews.com has a complete list of shelters that are open across southwest Florida at this link.

Government Offices and Services

Lee County

  • Lee County offices are closed through Friday.
  • Lee County Tax Collector is closing all Tax Collector locations through Friday.
  • The Lee Clerk’s office will remain closed through Friday, Oct. 11. All court hearings are suspended until further notice and will be rescheduled.
  • All Florida Department of Health in Lee County offices will be closed until Friday.
  • Lee County Utilities will shut off water in Fort Myers Beach beginning on Tuesday at noon.
  • All Lee Physician Group and Lee Health outpatient locations will be closed today through Thursday, with a few exceptions:
    • Lee Convenient Care (Urgent Care) locations will be open today from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. and closed Wednesday and Thursday.
    • All elective surgeries are canceled through Thursday.
    • The Call Center will be open Tuesday until 5 p.m. and closed on Wednesday and Thursday.
    • Both complex care centers will be open Tuesday and will have limited services.
    • All outpatient lab draw stations/clinics are also closed Tuesday through Thursday.

City of Sanibel

  • As of 10:00pm, Tuesday, October 8th, the City of Sanibel has implemented a 24-hour a day curfew that will be in effect until further notice.

Charlotte County

  • Charlotte County offices and facilities will close through Friday.
  • The Charlotte County Commission has canceled the regular meeting scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday.
  • The Charlotte County comfort station at Harold Avenue Regional Park, which offers laundry and shower services, is closed in preparation for Hurricane Milton.
  • Charlotte County Utilities will suspend operations at noon Wednesday, Oct. 9, until the storm passes and staff can safely address utility emergencies; however, water and sewer service is not suspended.  
    • For Hurricane Milton information, County Utilities asks you call the Charlotte County Emergency Operations Center at 941-833-4000.
  • The offices of the Charlotte County Clerk of the Circuit Court, Property Appraiser and Tax Collector will be closed Wednesday through Friday.

Collier County

  • Suspension of regular county business begins at noon on Tuesday through Thursday and includes but is not limited to all public meetings, parks, libraries, museums, animal services, and senior meal sites. Online services are available at colliercountyfl.gov.
  • The Florida Department of Health in Collier County (DOH-Collier) will remain closed until further notice.

City of Marco Island

  • All City of Marco Island city facilities will be closed through Thursday, Oct. 10.
  • Marco Island residents are encouraged to subscribe to Code Red for emergency alerts. Visit this link to sign up for Code Red.

City of Naples

  • City offices and facilities are closed Tuesday, October 8th through Thursday, October 10th.
  • All beach ends, the Naples Pier, the pier parking lot and city parks are closed.
  • The 4th Avenue South public parking garage is full, and any electric vehicles (EVs) parked on the 1st floor of the parking garage, or any cars blocking elevators and exits, will be towed.
  • Effective Wednesday, October 9th, all garbage, recycling and horticulture collection services have been suspended until further notice.  

State Services

  • All Disaster Recovery Centers in Florida will be closed. The centers will reopen when weather conditions improve and inspections are completed.
  • Courthouses in the 20th Judicial Circuit, which serves Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry and Lee Counties, will be closed until Friday.

Grocery Stores

  • All Publix stores in SWFL will close at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
  • Walmart in Lehigh Acres will close at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, and it plans to reopen on Thursday.

Trash Collection

  • Cape Coral Trash will have no service on Tuesday (10/8) or Wednesday (10/9). Regular pickups resume Thursday (10/10). Tuesday & Wednesday collections are delayed until next week (10/15 & 10/16)
  • There will be no collection of garbage, recycling, bulky or yard waste on Oct. 9 and 10 in unincorporated Collier County, the City of Marco Island, and the City of Everglades. No make-up collections will be made. Curbside collection services will resume on the next regularly scheduled day.
  • The Collier County Landfill, the Immokalee Transfer Station and the Recycling Drop-Off Centers will also be closed on Oct. 9 and 10. The facilities will reopen on Friday, Oct. 11.

Ports and Transportation

Tolls are suspended on the west coast of Florida and Alligator Alley. The suspension will continue until it is safe to return to evacuated areas.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management has partnered with Uber to provide Floridians free rides to and from shelters in counties evacuating for Milton. If you feel uncomfortable riding out the storm in your home, even if you aren’t in a mandatory evacuation zone, shelters are open and space is available.

Lee County

  • Florida Southwest International Airport is closed on Wednesday and Thursday. The airport plans to resume operations on Friday, but that is contingent upon the extent of the storm’s damage.
  • LeeTran has stopped running routes onto Fort Myers Beach. Services are to off-island transit only.
  • LeeTran fixed route and shuttle transportation assistance will be suspended by 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Visit LeeTran’s social media channels for specific route information. Announcements for resuming services will be forthcoming. 
  • Tolls on Lee County bridges – Cape Coral Parkway, Midpoint Bridge and the Sanibel Causeway – have been suspended.

Charlotte County

  • Charlotte County Transit service will be suspended through Thursday. Customers with current reservations will be notified of cancellations by phone. The reservation phone number, 941-575-4000, is closed until further notice.

Collier County

  • All Collier Area Transit (CAT) fares will be waived until further notice.
  • On Wednesday, October 9th at 4:00 PM, during the mandatory driving curfew, the City of Naples disabled 10 traffic intersections in flood-prone areas to prevent equipment damage. 
    • If you approach a non-operational intersection, treat it as a 4-way stop and stay alert. The following intersections that will be disabled in Naples:
      • Broad Ave S & 3rd St S
      • Broad Ave S & 8th St S
      • 10th Ave S & 9th St S
      • 6th Ave S & 10th St S
      • 6th Ave S & 9th St S
      • 5th Ave S & 3rd St S
      • 5th Ave S & 8th St S
      • Park Shore Dr & Gulf Shore Blvd N
      • Park Shore Dr & Crayton Rd
      • Banyan Blvd & Gulf Shore Blvd N

Hendry County

  • Hendry County’s public transit fixed route services with STREAM will continue until 12 pm (noon) on Wednesday, October 9. All fees will be waived at this time.
  • If anyone boards a bus and wishes to get to a Hendry County storm shelter, please let the driver know and they will make the adjustment to drop off at a shelter on the next stop. Residents needing transportation to a Hendry County shelter can call 877-935-4487.
  • All fixed route and door-to-door transportation services will be suspended from 12 p.m. (noon) on Wednesday, October 9, through Thursday, October 10.

Attractions

  • The Naples Zoo will remain closed through Friday, October 11th.
