A Saint James City man has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for possessing and accessing with intent to view images and videos depicting the sexual abuse of children.

According to the state attorney’s office, 68-year-old Douglas Alan Vander Laan was also sentenced to a 15-year term of supervised release and ordered to register as a sex offender.

Vander Laan entered a guilty plea on August 20, 2024.

According to court documents, between June and August 2023, the National Center of Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) received four cyber tips from an Electronic Service Provider reporting that Vander Laan had uploaded a file depicting child sexual abuse material onto an online visual search service to search for similar images.

On November 28, 2023, agents made contact with Vander Laan at his place of employment, and he agreed to speak with the agents.

Vander Laan admitted that he had used the visual search service to view images of unclothed children.

The FBI executed a search warrant at Vander Laan’s residence that same day and seized his laptop, revealing images and videos of child sexual abuse material.
