FORT MYERS, Fla.- Users of the online dating site, Plenty of Fish, are being targeted by scammers pretending to be with the Fort Myers Police Department.

Multiple site users say they were contacted by someone interested in meeting and exchanging phone numbers.

Once the victims provided their phone numbers, they were called by someone claiming to be with FMPD. The scammers attempted to scare the victims into believing they were illegally communicating with an underage person. In order to have the charges dropped, the victims were asked to pay up.

FMPD is reminding citizens that at no time will the police department solicit funds to “drop charges.”

Citizens should never provide any personal information or  banking information over the phone or e-mail to a non-solicited source.

If you have fallen victim to the scam, contact the Fort Myers Police Department at 239-321-7700.
