Parts of DeSoto County still dealing with flooding

Published: Updated:

ARCADIA, Fla. – Parts of Southwest Florida are still underwater after rain pounded the area.

High waters wore away at roads and left people taking boats to their homes.

One DeSoto County major road couldn’t handle the heavy rain. A hole was created and chunks of pavement were washed away along Brownsville Street. Concrete walls are placed along the damages to block traffic from passing through.

Many roads surrounding Gator Trail flooded on Sunday, forcing some people to use kayaks to get down their streets.

Others built a moat around their home to stop the water.

Neighbors say the water has receded in some areas, but other spots are still impassable. They say it’s been years since they saw flooding this bad.

A large portion of River Acres Drive was also flooded Monday morning.

County leaders shut down Brownsville Street after the flood waters washed away the road. They say the road will likely be closed for weeks. Crews must wait for the water to go down before they can fully assess the damage.
