Alabama town mulls how to stop gator-feeding at city park

DAPHNE, Ala. (AP) – A city park in south Alabama that features alligator viewing is open with new renovations, but there are concerns about safety after a gator dragged a toddler into a lake a Walt Disney resort in Florida.

Daphne Mayor Dane Haygood says Gator Alley Boardwalk is unique in that visitors can walk across a boardwalk to view the many gators in the water below. There are signs warning visitors not to feed the gators, but Haygood says police lack a way to enforce that. City officials are now considering ordinances.

Tiffany Durant tells Al.com that a large group of visitors fed marshmallows to the gators during a recent visit with her two children. She said that became a “huge problem,” as it drew the gators closer.

The Florida gator attack killed 2-year-old Lane Graves on June 14.
