Collier mulls new push for Atlanta Braves spring training

NAPLES, Fla. — Collier County is taking another swing at convincing the Atlanta Braves to move their spring training headquarters here.

The county’s first attempt was earlier this year when the Fifth Avenue Advisors investment group considered building a $75 million new stadium on a piece of land near Collier Boulevard and Interstate 75.

But homeowners in the neighboring communities were concerned about noise and traffic, and commissioners voted against the proposal.

Now the county is considering a new site in the City Gate area, which is north of Interstate 75 on the eastern side of Collier Boulevard, County Manager Leo Ochs said.

The cost of the land and construction of the stadium would be $100 million. The project would be funded by the state, a slight increase in tourist tax and the team.

County commissioners will vote on the proposal next Tuesday.

The Braves currently train at the Disney Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando.
