A nonprofit is feeding people in need and making sure they get tested for the coronavirus.

Meals of Hope has teamed up with Lab 24 to host a drive-thru COVID-19 testing sites in different parts of Southwest Florida while it runs mobile food pantries.

The two groups served more than 400 cars in less than three hours Monday in the parking lot of Lely Presbyterian Church in Lely.

“The nurses ask them if they would like to get tested [because] it is free,” said Judy Martin, the food pantry manager. “And they can stop there first. Then, they come down here and get their food. If they have already had it, that’s OK. They come down and still get their food. Everyone has been so appreciative. Everyone keeps saying thank you.”

The test sites are open to the public and available to all adults and children in the community without charge. Results are expected to be available within 48 to 96 hours.

Lab 24’s telemedicine doctors are expected to communicate results to the patients. Any positive results will be communicated to the CDC, who will then report it to Florida Department of Health.

Testing is expected to be available alternating weeks at designated each location since the CDC recommends testing every two weeks. For more information, Meals of Hope is available on Facebook for its weekly schedule, or go to www.MealsofHope.org to learn more.
