Several fire departments responded to nine fires that broke out in Hendry County due to an overnight lightning storm.

As a result of the fires there was a large-scale power outage in the county Monday night.

According to the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office, the fires were caused by severe lightning strikes in the Banyan Village area and along State Road 80.

First responders asked Tampa Avenue, 21st Street, and Vero Avenue residents to evacuate their homes to ensure safety during the storms.

At least five homes were evacuated due to the fire.

LaBelle Fire, Clewiston Fire Department, Pioneer Fire Department, Montura Fire Department, the Forestry Division and the Lee County Strike Team all responded.

The fires appeared to have been contained before dawn.

No injuries were reported.

It remains unknown how long residents will be without power.

The local Red Cross encourages people who were evacuated and require shelter to contact the shelter here.
